SOUTH CAROLINA "TOP TO BOTTOM" STORYTELLING TOUR
August 17, 2002

South Carolina Man, Mike Miller, First Storyteller to Tell Stories At
The Top And Bottom Of South Carolina
On The Same Day

Saturday, August 17, 2002, Storyteller Mike Miller started the day with a five hour drive and
a short walk up to Sassafras Mountain,(3,560 feet) the highest elevation in South Carolina, and told a
story to a small group of hikers.
The summit, owned by the Duke Energy Company, is open to the public without restriction (other than you have to walk 100 yards up a paved trail).
It straddles the North Carolina border

His next stop was Folly Beach,(sea level) the lowest elevation in South Carolina, and told a story to a
small group of curious folks.

The trip took him ten hours and he drove 560 miles.

Miller took on this feat in order to promote the oral tradition of storytelling in South Carolina.

"South Carolina has a rich heritage of storytelling and and in recent years there has been a decline in this tradition."
revealed Storyteller Mike Miller. "Many storytelling groups, such as the Southern Order of Storytellers and the recently formed,
South Carolina Storytelling Network,
have taken on the challenge of promoting the power of storytelling."

Miller encourages storytellers to take an active role in promoting storytelling to their communities.
